What is Intuition and
Where does it Come From?
What is Intuition? In general, dictionaries define intuition as the ability to have direct or quick insight without rational thought or reasoning.
Where does intuition come from? It has been said that Intuition is a direct link to our soul, our highest self, God or the Universal Mind. Intuition is often referred to as our sixth sense. There are four primary ways in which we can make the intuitive connection to receive guidance.
Exploring and Understanding Intuition: As we read, study and experience intuition in our own lives, we will develop our own personal truth, understanding, thoughts and feelings about where intuition comes from.
For now, let's deepen our understanding of intuition by looking at some of the ways in which well known authors explain or define intuition...
Authors Answer the Question, "What is Intuition?"
"Whether we call them hunches, gut feelings, senses, or dreams, they’re all the same thing – intuition, speaking to us, giving us insight and knowledge to help us make sound decisions about any number of actions we take. Intuition occurs when we directly perceive facts outside the range of the usual five senses and independently of any reasoning process." - Mona Lisa Schulz, Awakening Intuition.
"There is a universal, intelligent life force that exists within everyone and everything. It resides within each one of us as a deep wisdom, an inner knowing. We can access this wonderful source of knowledge and wisdom through our intuition, an inner sense that tells us what feels right and true for us at any given moment." - Shakti Gawain, Developing Intuition.
"Our sixth or psychic sense is not a physical sense like the other five - it's more of a spiritual sense, which is connected to our soul body and centered in the heart. Just as our physical senses keep our body informed and directed, our sixth sense's primary function is to guide our soul's growth and keep us connected to our creator, our spirit guides, and our angelic assistants, who direct us in our path and purpose." - Sonia Choquette, Trust Your Vibes.
"Intuition is perception beyond the physical senses that is meant to assist you. It is that sensory system which operates without data from the five senses." - Gary Zukav, Seat of the Soul.
In her book Divine Guidance, Doreen Virtue explains that we have constant access to divine guidance from God and the Angels. We could say that God and our angels speak to us thru our intuition. Doreen writes, "God and the angels have always spoken to you continuously. The have been guiding, coaxing, and encouraging you since you were first created."
How to Define Intuition?
What is intuition? As you can see, there are many ways to define intuition. While there may not be one definitive way to explain what intuition is or where it comes from, we can conclude that intuition is a guiding force or energy that is always available to us. This infinite, all knowing intelligence or energy comes from a source that is beyond our rational thinking mind and it guides us in a way that is always for the highest good.
We can tap into this source of infinite wisdom to guide us in making big and small decisions. There are many benefits to developing intuition. Using intuition regularly can enhance our lives in ways that we can't even imagine with our rational mind.
The truth is that it doesn’t actually matter what we call intuition or where we say that it comes from because it is absolute, regardless of how we choose to language it.
Just as electricity and gravity work whether we understand how they work or not, we can believe in and use intuition without a clear understanding of where it comes from or what makes it work.
