Surface Options for Creating a Photo Collage - Treasure Map

Creating a photo collage is a great way to identify and manifest your goals and desires, it's effective and fun! I refer to this goal setting and manifesting technique as Treasure Mapping. On this page, I've listed some different surface options that you can use for creating a photo collage to make a Treasure Map.

When preparing to create a photo collage to make a Treasure Map, it is helpful to first decide which surface you will put your images onto. Treasure Maps come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some fun ideas of what you can use to glue, paste, tape or pin your collage words and images on to when making a Treasure Map:

Paper or Poster Board:

When creating a photo collage for Treasure Mapping, you can use any size paper that you want to. For instance, you can use a 9"x11" sheet of paper or 12"x12" scrap booking paper. You can use plain white paper or choose a color that you like. If you want to dress your Treasure Map up a bit, you can use decorative scrap booking paper (available in both sizes) which adds a nice background to your collage. Also, Poster board (half or full size) is a nice option as it is sturdy and large, giving you lots of room to work.

Cork Board:

Rather than working with paper and glue or tape, you can create a photo collage by pinning your Treasure Map images onto a cork board. Using a cork board works well for Treasure Mapping and it gives you some flexibility that you don’t have with paper. For instance, once your images manifest, you could take them off and put them on another board that shows the goals that have been fulfilled. The other option would be to (with gratitude) put the images into the recycle/garbage bin since you no longer need them (now that you have the real thing). Removing manifested images from your board will give you room to add something else if you so desire. Or your may choose to leave all images on the board, the choice is yours.

Treasure Map Journal or Scrapbook:

Journal: You can create a Treasure Map Journal by using an artist sketchbook or a hard bound journal (without lines on the pages). This gives you freedom to write/journal or draw in addition to pasting Treasure Map images into your journal. You can have one Treasure Map Journal to capture desires for your overall life or you can specify certain pages for specific goals or areas of your life.

Scrapbook: You can create a Treasure Map Scrapbook by combining individual Treasure Maps (done on 9” x 11” paper) in a binder or a scrap booking album (using the 12’ x 12” scrap booking paper is a nice option). Either way, it’s a good idea to enclose each Treasure Map in a clear plastic sleeve to protect them but also as a way to store them in the binder/album.

Manila Folders:

In the book, Something More; Excavating Your Authentic Self, Sara Ban Breathnach shares a creative approach to creating a photo collage. She refers to the process as creating an Illustrated Discovery Journal (i.e. several Treasure Maps, each representing a different area of your life). Sara suggests using 9” x 12” manila envelopes. The envelopes become a convenient storage area for the images that you cut out then the envelope itself becomes the medium in which you paste your images on to.

Each envelope can be the focus of one life area or goal that you want to focus on; some examples are Career/Life’s Work, Relationships, Marriage, Spiritual Journey, Ideal Health, Entertainment, etc. Sarah recommends writing one life category on each one while labeling one of them as “Mystery”. Sarah writes, “As you select your images, put them into whichever envelope you think fits them best. Follow your instincts, no assessing allowed. If you are unsure which envelope to put it into, put it in the one labeled, Mystery.”

How often you work on your illustrated discovery journal (Treasure Maps) is up to you but Sarah suggests twice a week for fast remarkable results. One night you cut, the next night you paste or spend a month collecting images and then create your collages one at a time. Sarah suggests doing one collage per sitting so you can really focus on it, giving it the energy that it deserves. Soon you will have a several beautiful and creative collages of visual images that express and manifest what your heart desires for the various areas of your life!!

As you can see, there are several ways to begin the process of creating a photo collage (i.e. Treasure Map) to identify and manifest your goals and desires! This step by step process on how to make a Treasure Mapwill help you to make a Treasure Map that is uniquely yours!
